Hall of Fame Calls

ANDREW JACKSON (A.J.) SMITHERMAN INDUCTED TO HALL OF FAME

We're pleased to announce that AJ Smitherman has been inducted into the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame! The induction ceremony was initially slated for April 24, 2020 at the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City, however this was cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.  The ceremony was postponed and later held on Friday May 14, 2021 with both a live component and a ZOOM audience.

Smitherman was selected as part of a special 50th anniversary Posthumous Class. Joe Hight, Director, Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame said "I want to send my heartfelt congratulations to your family. While this should have occurred many years ago, it is fitting that he is being inducted during the hall of fame’s 50th anniversary. The hall of fame induction is considered the highest journalistic honor in Oklahoma."

Here are several photos of the plaque presented to the Smitherman Family and acknowledged that evening with an introductory address by Will Rogers' grand-daughter and Raven Mejia Williams, great-grand-daughter of A.J. Smitherman.  Grandchildren Judith Mabra McDaniels and Bill Dozier ceremoniously accepted the plaque as part of the ZOOM event.
